Thomas Jefferson Black, 88, of London, Texas passed away on July 1, 2018 at his home.
TJ was born on April 20, 1930, on a ranch in the London area to Jack and Nannie Black. Graduating from Junction High School, he attended Tarleton State University and from there went to San Marcos State. It was at San Marcos that he met his beloved wife, Claire. Married in May of 1952, they recently celebrated their 66th anniversary. Growing up on a ranch, he wanted to be a rancher. When daughter, Brenda and son, Tommy arrived, it didn't take him long to realize that ranching was not going to support his young family, so he entered the petrochemical industry as a materials manager for Union Carbide in Brownsville, Texas. That job took him all over the world, including Brazil and Puerto Rico.
After retirement, TJ and Claire returned to the London area, where he was always busy. In addition to compiling a book of "Old Words, Phrases & Sayings", he was a Deacon at the London Baptist Church for the past eight years, and Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge #548 for the past year.
TJ had a great love for his church and for his family. He is preceded in death by his son, James Thomas Black. He is survived by his wife, Claire; daughter, Brenda Eldred; and grandsons, John Thomas Shead and his family: Telisa, Cooper, and Holden, and James Daniel Shead and his family: Matt, Jason and Kevin.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at London Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Wynn officiating. Interment will follow in the London Cemetery with Masonic Rites conducted by the Masonic Lodge #548.
