Margaret Wessels

Margaret May Robertson Wessels was born in La Grange, Texas, on May 23, 1938, and entered God’s Kingdom peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 21, 2024. She was the middle child born to Clyde and Vlasta Robertson and spent her early years with her sisters, JoAnn and Susan, in La Grange.

She married Glenn Wessels on June 2, 1957, and followed him during his college years, making stops in College Station, San Angelo, and Commerce. She and Glenn eventually settled in Lake Jackson, where Glenn worked for Dow Chemical, and Margaret was a stay-at-home mom to five children. They spent countless hours supporting their children’s activities at ballparks and school events but especially cherished time outdoors. Her kids always knew that college—specifically Texas A&M—came after high school, and Margaret was proud of their accomplishments. In a journal, she expressed a wish to have finished her four-year degree but reflected that raising her children taught her more than any degree ever could. Loving and nurturing her family was her greatest priority. She ultimately earned an associate’s degree from Brazosport College in 1975.

Margaret enjoyed bridge, dominoes, quilting, needlework, bluebonnets, ice cream, and being a proud Republican. She could never sleep until everyone in the household had adequate covers. Her most cherished moments were those spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. After Glenn’s passing in 1999, Margaret became a reluctant cowgirl, checking fences and feeding cattle from her minivan.

She was an avid collector of coins, walking sticks, spoons, and thimbles. As a rockhound, she spent countless hours searching for fossils and arrowheads at the family ranch in Junction and her home on the San Saba River in Menard. Margaret delighted in wildlife encounters, including a memorable black bear sighting that no one believed—until the local newspaper confirmed multiple sightings across the county the following week.

Margaret took great pride in her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and her knowledge of six generations of ancestors who came before her. She loved traveling both domestically and abroad, proudly visiting all 50 states. Margaret valued connection over material gifts, emphasizing shared meals and meaningful gestures. Known for her quick wit, fun-loving spirit, and independence, she had a remarkable gift for making others feel special with her kind words and warm compliments.

In her own words: “Take the time to laugh along the way. Sometimes a good laugh is all you are going to get.”

Margaret is survived by her children: Mike (Lucy) Wessels of Bluntzer, David (Suzie) Wessels of Mico, Cindy (Lawton) King of Sweeny, Kelly (John) Crosley of Lake Jackson, and Lynette (Patrick) Nagler of Sweeny, as well as 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 11:00am, in the Old Sacred Heart Chapel, 220 Bevans Street, Menard, Texas. Committal service will follow at the Fort McKavett Cemetery in Fort McKavett, Texas. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
