SAN ANGELOLewis Ferguson, 92, died May 10 in a San Angelo hospital. Mr. Ferguson was born July 8, 1921, in Mason County, the only child of Dave and Dona Ferguson. He grew up primarily in Mason and Kimble Counties, graduating from Junction High School in 1938. He attended the University of Texas and Abilene Christian University, graduating from ACU in 1943. Later in life, he completed a masters degree at Texas AM.
After he graduated from ACU, he went on active duty with the U.S. Navy. He spent most of his first year and a half of the service in various training activities, before moving to combat in the Pacific theatre in 1945 as a radar operator aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Massey. He was involved in the massive naval operation at Okinawa, earning a Bronze Star for his service.
In 1947, he met and married June Blackwell. They had three children and spent most of their married life living on the family ranch in Kimble County. He became a teacher in 1952, retiring in 1981. He taught at Junction High School until 1975, and then moved to Sonora as a distributive education teacher until his retirement. June died in 1987, and he remained on the ranch, until late in life when he lived in Junction for several years. In 2011 he moved to San Angelo, near his daughter Pat, where he lived until his death.
As a rancher, one of his primary focuses was Angora goats. In the summers, he was active in the Angora show and sales circuit, and from this became a selftaught auctioneer, working many of the sales where he also exhibited.
He was a member of the College Street Church of Christ in Junction for most of his adult life, serving as an elder and actively involved in church activities until his move to San Angelo.
He is survived by his son Scott and wife Vickie, of Coppell daughter Martha Thompson and her husband Phil, of Aledo daughter Pat King and her husband Tommy, of San Angelo and by six grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
