Hoy Wilburn Smith passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Kimble Hospital in Junction, TX following a valiant fight with various health issues.
Hoy was born to Houston Smith and Mildred Brown Smith in his family’s grocery store in Junction, TX on June 19, 1947. After graduating from Junction High School, he attended Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, TX and then Sul Ross University in Alpine, TX where he received a teaching degree. Hoy married fellow JHS classmate, former Carolyn Davis, in 1989. After graduation, Hoy worked as a teacher in Damon, Harper, Ingram, Junction, Corpus Christi, and Rocksprings. During this time Hoy worked as a coach, taught math, history, science and then began teaching Special Education which was his favorite. While in Corpus Christi, Hoy valued his position working with severely and profoundly disabled children; he held this position for seven years. Hoy’s students loved him and he loved them. Many will remember his love of hunting, fishing, red beans, iron skillets, hot peppers and Cheetos. Hoy had a green thumb and could often be found in his garden, was a wonderful chef, and talented pencil sketch artist - his favorite subject was ranch life, and he loved animals. He loved to tell stories and to make others laugh. Hoy was also a man of faith. At every opportunity he loved to talk to people about God’s Kingdom and how it would bring an opportunity for everyone to enjoy life forever on a paradise earth.
Hoy was preceded in death by his parents, Houston Smith and Mildred Brown Smith.
Hoy is survived by his loving wife Carolyn Smith; sons, Travis Smith and Michael Ausmus; and grandchildren, Amber and Houston Smith. Hoy will be dearly missed by his family and friends who loved him.
Memorial Services will be held for Hoy at Kimble Funeral Home on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Hoy Smith’s name to JW.org or Meals on Wheels.
